Please look at the time stamp on the story to see when it was last updated.CHICAGO —&nbsp; Target is looking to take over part of the space that Macy’s is leaving at Water Tower Place on the Magnificent Mile.Cook County Tresurer Maria Pappas says a Target store at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Pearson would damage the reputation of that well-heeled shopping district. She calls the idea an “embarrassment” to the city.“There is nothing “magnificent” about Target,” Pappas said. “There’s nothing wrong with Target. I shop at Target. There’s nothing wrong with Target, it just doesn’t belong in Water Tower.”The treasurer says it is crucial to keep the moneyed history of Michigan Avenue intact, for one of Chicago’s bigger attractions.“The entire country knows what the Magnificent Mile is. You know what? This is David and Goliath. I’m David with my little slingshot,” Pappas said. “I don’t know if I can stop them from coming in, but they don’t call me “Dragon Lady” for nothing. I am going to put up a big fight. I’m putting a call in to the CEO of Target today, and hopefully he will reason and talk to me.”Pappas says it isn’t the pandemic, but security that is the main problem in that area. She said Brookfield Properties, which operates Water Tower, needs to work with the city and the Chicago Police Department to shore up safety in that part of the city. Pappas says without that, high-end retailers will not be coming to Michigan Avenue.Brookfield Properties released the following statement Tuesday:We have yet to confirm future plans for Water Tower Place. The public discussion of future tenancy is purely speculative.Brookfield Properties shopping centers are inclusive environments for the communities we serve and aim to offer something for everyone.
