The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources was planning for a wolf hunting season in November. However, Hunter Nation, a Wisconsin-based hunting advocacy group, sued the DNR to start the hunting season as soon as possible, concerned President Biden's administration would reinstate protections for gray wolves before the planned November hunt. A Jefferson County judge ruled in favor of Hunter Nation. The DNR set a quota of 200 wolves, with 81 set aside for the Ojibwe Tribes under its treaty rights. That left 119 wolves for hunters who applied for permits with the department. The hunting season was supposed to last a full week, but the DNR ended it four days early when hunters exceeded the state's quota.Hunters killed 216 wolves in less than 60 hours. That's more than 80% above the allotted wolf quota. Based off a DNR zone map, many of the wolves were killed in northern Wisconsin. The Humane Society of the United States is now fighting to get the gray wolf back on the endangered species list. "Those individual wolves were killed using especially cruel and egregious methods. Most of them, 86%, were chased down with packs of dogs and others were killed using steel leg hold traps and strangling wild neck snares," said Amanda Wight, wildlife protection program manager with the Humane Society of the United States. "The hunt also took place during the wolves mating season and it's likely some pregnant wolves were killed as well, which is just awful."Wight said the DNR gave out more than 2,000 permits for the hunting season, almost double what they'd normally give out. The DNR said they ended the hunting season as soon as they realized how many wolves were being killed. However, because hunters are given 24 hours to report their kill, the DNR said they did not know in real-time how many wolves had been killed."Should we could we have done it sooner? Based off the data before us, we were doing our best to hit that 119 number. Did we go over? We did. Is that something we wanted to have happen? Absolutely not," said Eric Lobner with the Wisconsin DNR. Hunter Nation did not return WISN 12's requests for comment, but in its blog said the wolf hunt was successful. The blog said wolves kill livestock and pets and need to be hunted and said the hunt put $500,000 in the state's wildlife account. The DNR said before the February wolf hunt, there were an estimated 1,200 wolves in Wisconsin. Lobner said those numbers still remain strong. "Our populations are very robust. Wolves have a large home range," Lobner said. Animal rights activists disagree. "As the DNR plans for a November hunt, we're planning to participate in all available processes and we'll be closely monitoring the situation and evaluating our options," Wight said. She added that the Humane Society of the United States is actively fighting in federal court to reinstate protections for the gray wolf. "This was a decision made by politicians, not by scientists.
