There are also 33 volunteer vaccinators with health care backgrounds.“I am so happy to be able to do something,” retired nurse and midwife Candace Delisio said. “I read somewhere that the vaccine clinics are the happiest places to be. That’s how I used to feel in the birthing unit birthing babies and the people are so grateful.”Delisio knows the toll the virus can take. She became ill with COVID-19 in September.“Once I got sick, I thought, I want to be here on the frontlines if I can,” Delisio said. Katie Dodge, of York Hospital, said they are always looking for volunteers, as the effort to vaccinate Mainers is more of a marathon than a sprint. The clinic is expected to be open until September.“We had a growing list of volunteers before we received our first dose,” Dodge said. “Support to keep the momentum going until we get that herd immunity, which is the goal.”While the average stay at the clinic is about 30 minutes, the interactions with the public are important for volunteers. “A woman came through today who taught with my mother as a school teacher in the 70s and told me she remembered me.
