It was previously set to expire in March.He’ll then work to make the system that helped propel record-breaking turnout in the November election permanent.“Since we first enacted vote by mail, it has proven to be secure and even increased voter turnout in many places,” Mariano said in a statement released by his office on Wednesday. “The House looks forward to making vote by mail a permanent way for residents to exercise their right to vote during and beyond the pandemic.”Nearly 42% of all ballots cast in the November general election were by mail, accounting for more than 1.5 million of the cast overall, Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin’s office said.Galvin and several state lawmakers are looking to do away with the pre-pandemic system of excuse-based absentee ballots in favor of more broad-based mail-in voting.Galvin’s legislation also pushes for expanded early in-person voting and same-day voter registration.State Sen. Cynthia Creem, D-Newton, and Rep. John Lawn, D-Watertown, echoed those calls in their bill,&nbsp;Fostering Voting Opportunities, Trust, Equity and Security (VOTES), which seeks to codify several of last year’s voting reforms, including no-excuse mail balloting.Legislation filed by state Sen. Rebecca Rausch, D-Needham, would who cast ballots by mail during the 2020 elections as “permanent mail voters,” with the ability to opt out.Mariano said he would work with Ways and Means Chairman state Rep.
