During Thursday’s sting, three female undercover law enforcement officers posted prostitution ads online. Several people responded to the ads and arranged to meet with one of the women at a National City motel room. The men were arrested when they reached the room, National City police Detective Dennis Josse said. AdvertisementThe men who showed up aged in range from 22 to 62. They hailed from throughout the county, from San Diego to El Cajon to Oceanside. One of the men was a resident of Las Vegas.Josse said the sting was part of an annual operation run around Valentine’s Day, but several similar operations happen throughout the year. Generally, he said, it’s a cash business — the customers pay when they arrive — although one buyer asked if he could use Venmo, an online payment method. The operation was done as part of the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force. Departments that took part in Thursday’s sting included police from National City, Chula Vista and Escondido, as well as the Sheriff’s Department. “Prostitution is not a victimless crime,” Josse said in a news release announcing the sting results. “This criminal activity has evolved and often includes young women who are coerced or forced to participate in prostitution often arranged online.”Victims of human trafficking can get help by calling the National Human Trafficking Resource Center’s hotline anytime at (888) 373-7888.
