The purchase was called off last week."The commissioner and many members of his team had originally been spending significant time on the road traveling around the state to local health departments," a spokeswoman for the Health Department said. "Given the ongoing COVID response, this has not been the case, and in light of state budget shortfalls, this PO was canceled."The purchase order cancellation came Friday after a news story about the SUV in The Oklahoman sparked criticism of the commissioner.The Health Department also was going to pay $2,739 for "tag and title fees" on the Ford Explorer and $420 for GPS for a year, according to purchase orders."The commissioner had been using his own vehicle, except for one trip, for these initial trips," the Health Department said in January. "It became obvious that much travel will be required to meet our mission and it was decided that the most efficient and reliable transportation would be to purchase a vehicle."The Health Department also said in January that "our staff" negotiated with dealers to get the price down from $33,000.Gov. Kevin Stitt picked Cox to lead the Health Department last September. The appointment requires confirmation by the Senate.Also, the Legislature must agree to a change in the law on the requirements to be commissioner for Cox to continue in the position.
