JENNIFER C: MORE THAN 50 RESIDENTS LIVED IN THE 24 UNITS AT SUN VIEW. ALL MADE IT OUT, BUT THERE WERE SOME CLOSE CALLS. &gt;&gt; ON THE THIRD FLOOR, WE HAD TO GET A GUY COME DOWN A LADDER. JENNIFER C: TWO PEOPLE WERE HOSPITALIZED WITH NON LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES. JENNIFER C: THE CHIEF SAYS THE FIRE STARTED ON A REAR BALCONY, AND QUICKLY MADE ITS WAY UP INTO THE ROOF. EIGHT HOURS AFTER IT STARTED, SMOKE STILL BILLOWING FROM WHAT’S LEFT IN THE BACK. &gt;&gt; THE BUILDING HAS COLLAPSED ON ITSELF, IT IS CALLED A PANCAKE. WE NEED TO REMOVE IT AND LAY’S, EXTINGUISH IT -- IN LAYER’S, EXTINGUISH IT, AND MAKE SURE THE FIRE IS OUT. JENNIFER C: CREWS SALVAGED SOME BELONGINGS, AND WHILE A FEW PETS ARE STILL MISSING, SOME WERE FOUND OK. SUNVIEW APARTMENTS COMPLEX WASN’T DAMAGED, THOUGH GAS WAS CUT OFF FOR A TIME AS A PRECAUTION THE RED CROSS IS HELPING ANY DISPLACED RESIDENTS THAT NEED A PLACE TO STAY.Advertisement2 injured in fire that tore through 3-story apartment building in RaymondFire officials say sprinkler system wasn't able to put out fireTwo people were injured and dozens displaced in a Monday morning fire in a three-story apartment building in Raymond.Fire officials said they believe the fire started on an outside balcony in the rear of the building on Route 27, but they don't yet know the cause of the fire.Firefighters were called to the fire just before 4:30 a.m., but officials said it's possible the fire started much earlier."We had one occupant that says they smelled plastic burning around 2 o'clock," said Deputy Fire Chief Gerry Gallant.Fire officials said there was heavy smoke and fire coming from one of the apartment buildings at Sunview Apartments, and a man was starting to jump from the third floor when they arrived."When Lt. (Adam) Brackett got here, they raised a ground ladder, took it out to the back and rescued the man and his cat," Gallant said.Residents said there were other pets that didn't make it out. Fire officials said two people were taken to hospitals. The extent of their injuries was unclear, but they were not considered life-threatening. It took about two and a half hours to get the three-alarm fire under control. Gallant said he could only speculate as to the cause."All of these balconies have water heaters or heaters in them that are run by propane for their hot water and all their other stuff," he said.He said it's possible one malfunctioned, allowing the fire to spread even though the building was equipped with sprinklers."If it was a problem with the heater, they're gas-fed heaters, so the gas would keep on," he said. "(The sprinklers) wouldn't be enough to put the gas out."Chief Paul Hammond said the fire started on a rear balcony and spread to the roof."The building has collapsed on itself," he said. "It's called a pancake, and we need to remove it in layers, extinguish it, make sure the entire fire's out."The school district is offering residents a place to get warm, and the Girl Scouts are starting to collect clothing for those who lost everything in the fire.
