The driver suspected of causing an 8-car crash that killed a pedestrian and injured three others in San Francisco on Thursday was under the influence and recklessly driving a stolen vehicle, police said.Jerry Lyons, 31 — who was among four people who were injured in the 8-car crash — was arrested and booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, vehicular manslaughter, felony hit and run, DUI causing injury to another, driving a stolen vehicle, reckless driving causing injury to another, possession of stolen property, hit and run/property damage, failure to stop for a red light, speeding and committing an offense while on post release community supervision, San Francisco police said Thursday night.“Lyons was released on (Post Release Community Supervision) to county probation from California State Prison following a grand theft conviction,” police said, but did not provide further information on when he was released, or from which prison.Police said California Highway Patrol officers in San Francisco arrested him in December 2020 on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle, being an unlicensed driver and driving under the influence. It was immediately unclear if he was charged or convicted in that incident.Police released few details about the moments leading up the fatal crash near Higuera Avenue and Lake Merced Boulevard, but said Thursday night that Lyons had been driving a 2003 Ford Explorer that had been reported stolen out of San Jose. The crash occurred before 8 a.m.Officers responding to the incident found a 26-year-old man lying in the roadway. He died at the scene, police said. His name was not immediately released.His body moved to the side of the street and covered in a yellow tarp. Their conditions were unknown on Thursday night. Lyons was also taken to the hospital and later released and booked, police said.Glass and debris from the smashed cars littered the roadway more than two hours after officers arrived at the scene.Lake Merced Boulevard was shut to traffic in both directions. The wrecked cars, some with airbags deployed, came to rest in a sea of broken glass, bumpers, fenders and hubcaps.
