HAVE EVEN SEEN SOME LIGHTNING WITH THE TERTIARY LOW THIS MORNING. DRY AIR CAN BE SEEN ON SATELLITE, SPREADING NORTHWARD ONSHORE ACROSS LONG ISLAND AND SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND. THIS WILL CONTINUE TO LIFT NORTHWARD THROUGH THE DAY TODAY, EVENTUALLY SPREADING INTO OUR REGION BY EARLY AFTERNOON. HENCE EXPECT THE STEADY SNOW CURRENTLY AFFECTING OUR REGION TAPER OFF IN INTENSITY FROM SOUTH TO NORTH DURING THE MID-LATE MORNING HOURS, ROUGHLY 8-10 AM. SNOW TOTALS DURING THIS TIME WILL MAINLY BE IN THE 3 TO 6 INCH RANGE, WITH 6 TO 10 INCHES IN THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF THE SOUTHERN GREENS AND ON THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE ADIRONDACKS. WE WILL SEE A LULL IN THE SNOW THROUGH MID AFTERNOON, ESPECIALLY IN CENTRAL/ SOUTHERN AREAS. HOWEVER, AS THE AFOREMENTIONED TERTIARY LOW LIFTS THROUGH THE GULF OF MAINE AND INTO DOWNEAST MAINE, MOISTURE WILL SPREAD BACK INTO THE REGION ON NORTH FLOW. THE UPPER LEVEL LOW WILL PROVIDE DYNAMIC SUPPORT, AND EXPECT SNOW WILL REDEVELOP AGAIN ACROSS THE NORTH 4 PM, JUST IN TIME FOR THE EVENING COMMUTE. SOUTHERN AREAS WILL CONTINUE TO JUST SEE LIGHT SNOW SHOWERS, PERHAPS WITH SOME PERIODS OF FREEZING DRIZZLE AS DRIER AIR DOMINATES ALOFT AWAY. NORTHERN AREAS MEANWHILE WILL GET ANOTHER 3 TO 5 INCHES, WITH 6 TO 8 INCHES ON NORTHEASTERN SLOPES OF THE ADIRONDACKS DUE TO UPSLOPE AND CONVERGENCE OF THAT INCOMING MOISTURE. MEANWHILE, A VERY SHARP RIDGE ADVANCING INTO THE NORTH COUNTRY WILL SCATTER CLOUDS OUT AND EVENTUALLY YIELD WELCOME SUNSHINE ACROSS THE REGION. TEMPERATURES ALOFT UNDER THIS RIDGE LOOK QUITE MILD FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR, PEAKING ABOVE 36 DEGREES ABOUT 4500 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND THURSDAY NIGHT. Areas of Vermont aren't far behind — a report from Milton showed 11.4 inches of accumulation just before 7 p.m. Snow-related crashes have been reported by police in both Vermont and New Hampshire; no injuries have been reported. With winds and the possibility for snow drifts continuing throughout the night, transportation authorities are asking residents to limit travel and be mindful of safe driving practices. Residents of northern areas can expect another 3 to 6 inches of accumulation by Wednesday afternoon, though meteorologists predict lower amounts are more likely in the Champlain Valley.
