Woman believes she may be target of a hate crimeDrink hurled at Carmel Valley jogger; possible hate crime7:07 PM, Jan 27, 2021SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A young woman in Carmel Valley shared her experience of having a drink hurled at her from a moving car. Many others said she was not the only one and explained she might be a target of a hate crime.On Monday afternoon, a young woman was going on her usual jog in Carmel Valley when suddenly, she saw a black car slowing down beside her. She said inside were two teens or young men, up to no good."He slowed down just a bit in front of me, they roll down the window, and threw the McDonald's cup, and just sped away," the woman said.She said the young men shouted profanity at her and threw the fast-food cup filled with ice and a drink toward her face. Luckily she dodged it, but this young woman did not want to be identified for fear of retaliation."I was just standing there like watching them drive by, "What just happened?" she said confusingly.Her aunt posted the incident on her neighborhood app, and within the day, multiple people chimed in.One woman said she too was yelled at and thrown a McDonald's cup from a car full of teenage boys on Mango Drive. Another woman posted that the same thing happened to her daughter on High Bluff Drive near Ocean Vista. On Sunday, another woman's husband had a milkshake thrown at him by young men fitting the descriptions. A different woman also commented, saying she was yelled profanities and thrown McDonald's cups at Caminito Del Mar Shores.A map shows that the incident locations are concentrated in one area of Carmel Valley. Many of the posters also noticed that this may even be a hate crime as many victims, including our young woman, identify as Asian."It does seem like a hate crime. In general, this is something that is just unacceptable, like you should not treat somebody else like this," the woman said.San Diego Police is aware of at least two of the incidents. But at this time, the department cannot confirm if they are race-motivated crimes. Police are asking any other victims to come forward so they can build a case."You want to have the freedom to be in a safe neighborhood and do as you please and not worry about looking over your shoulder and making sure like it's not going to happen again," the woman said.The young woman has asked San Diego Police doe increased patrols in the area in hopes that these incidents don't happen anymore.Copyright 2021 Scripps Media, Inc.
