The crimes have continued to climb in early 2021 after occurring at a near 20-year high last year.AdvertisementCarjackings rose about 135%, to 1,415 in 2020 from 603 in 2019, according to a Tribune review of police information. The 2020 tally was the highest figure recorded here since 2001, when Chicago logged only slightly more with 1,422, the city statistics show.As of last week, there had been some 165 carjackings in Chicago in 2021. Police have made more than 100 arrests but about 60 of the arrestees have been charged only with misdemeanor trespass to vehicle, police said. Lightfoot announced Wednesday that 40 more police officers would be added to teams investigating these crimes.AdvertisementThe 14-year-old was suspected of being involved in as many as nine carjackings and robberies that occurred between July and this month all over the South Side, several of them in the Calumet Heights area.One incident occurred Tuesday night in the 4400 block of South Oakenwald Avenue, in the North Kenwood neighborhood, during which he allegedly She was not injured.In that attack, the teen and a 15-year-old accomplice were captured on video surveillance using a vehicle that was taken in a different carjacking, police said. The teen admitted his involved in the off-duty officer’s carjacking, and police recovered the officer’s weapon, police said.The 14-year-old, who is not being named because he is a juvenile, was scheduled to appear for a hearing Thursday at the Juvenile Justice Center, Chicago police said. He resides in the Park Manor neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, police said.He was arrested shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday after a “brief foot pursuit” in the 7100 block of South Indiana Avenue. At the time of the teen’s arrest, he was on electronic monitoring, according to authorities.The teen was charged as a juvenile with aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, armed robbery with a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, possessing a stolen vehicle, robbery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, Chicago police said. At the time of the boy’s arrest, he was on electronic home monitoring for another crime, police said.The other incidents he allegedly is connected to, many of which police said he was identified as taking part in through photo arrays by victims, occurred in the 8800 block of South Luella Avenue, the 1600 block of East 92nd Place, the 8900 block of South Constance Avenue, the 600 block of East Bowen Avenue, the 2600 block of East 91st Street, the 7900 block of South State Street, the 8800 block of South East End Avenue and the 8600 block of South University Avenue, police said.Details were not available immediately on the boy’s 14 prior arrests.AdvertisementOn Jan. 8, about two dozen concerned citizens gathered in Calumet Heights, where several crimes allegedly involving the teen took place, to hand out flyers door to door. The sheets included information telling citizens how to prevent being a victim of a carjacking and other crimes.In a Tribune interview that day, Capt. Michael Murphy of the Chicago police’s South Chicago District, which covers Calumet Heights, also offered some safety tips for motorists to prevent becoming the next carjacking victim.“Try not to sit in the cars on that long telephone call, you know, or things like that, because you’re distracted,” Murphy said at Friday’s event. “Get in the car. Go to where you need to go. Get out of the car. Go in. Get back to your car. Have your keys ready.
