(WAOW) -- The is underway in Stevens Point, and officials there have solidified a plan to update Emerson Park with accessible and enjoyable outdoor recreation.Emerson Park is the only public city park in districts 3 &amp; 5 in Stevens Point, but the space has not always been a park.According to city officials, the space was home to several schools, then a fairground, before becoming a park.Two demolished schools are buried under the current park lot, and the space itself is apart of Stevens Point's rich history.Above are just some of the reasons why there's a push to raise money to "You'll never see another building here other than the pergola, the shelter we intend to build," Friends of Emerson Park Treasurer Meleesa Johnson said. "This will always for generations to come be the only urban park in the city of Stevens Point."To give perspective, some of the playground equipment at Emerson Park has been around since the 1970's.The plan is to update the equipment to something larger, more exciting and safer.Not only playground upgrades, but there's a plan for a multi-use athletic court that would include basketball, pickleball, and tennis. There is also plans to add a new pavilion."We also want to include just a couple parking spots that are ADA accessible and then obviously just a lot of open green space for family and friends to gather and the ability to still have an ice rink as well," Friends of Emerson Park Co-Chair Danielle Weaver said.The upgrades would be made over multiple phases, and the playground upgrades would be within the first one. However, the timeline strictly depends on fundraising efforts with high hopes to start next year.As a project for the community by the community, total costs range around $700,000 with only a portion of that being raised so far.
