Two weeks after Northside Independent School District Superintendent Brian Woods asked parents to consider temporarily keeping their children in virtual learning amid a local surge in coronavirus cases, the district is extending that request by one week.“We had hoped to see an improvement in the city’s health metrics and allow students to return Feb. 1. However, we have seen inconsistent metrics,” Woods said in a statement Wednesday. “Because of that, we ask that if you are able and your child is successful in the virtual environment that you delay a return to in-person learning for at least another week.”Texas requires all public schools to offer in-person learning to any family that wants it, so compliance with the request, which was also made at some other local districts, is voluntary. Throughout the fall, Woods had been encouraging parents to send their kids back to school, because in-person instruction has proven to be more effective for many students.On ExpressNews.com:But in the first week of classes after the winter break, Northside — the largest school district in Bexar County with more than 100,000 students — reported 582 active coronavirus cases among students and staff, more than the total for the three previous weeks, which included the break. Last week, Northside had 281 active cases among students and staff.Bexar County’s test positivity rate has decreased each of the past three weeks and the seven-day rolling average of new cases has been trending downward since Jan. 16.District leaders will reassess next week and determine whether they will once again encourage students to return to campuses, Woods said.andy.picon@hearst.com | Twitter: @andpicon
