As of Saturday afternoon, the Met Office had issued five separate severe weather warnings for snow and ice, affecting large parts of southern England and the Midlands, most of Wales, and western and northern areas of Scotland. "The rain will turn to snow readily on Sunday morning with some places seeing small accumulations of 1-3cm at low levels but possibly 3-7cm over 100m. "Higher ground such as Dartmoor and Exmoor are likely to see the largest accumulations with 10-15cm possible here. "Once the main area of precipitation clears wintry showers will feed in from the west maintaining the risk of icy stretches and more localised snow accumulations." The Met Office warned: "An area of snow will move across Wales and central and southern England on Sunday, becoming slow moving for a time across the Midlands."This will bring 1-3cm of snow across much of the warning area, though not all sites will see lying snow, with areas above 100m likely to be worst affected. "Here areas of 5-10cm of snow are possible, particularly for parts of Shropshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Hampshire." Some rural communities could become cut off. The Met Office said: "An area of rain, sleet and snow will move into south-east England from the west on Sunday morning, lingering here for much of the day before gradually clearing Sunday night. "1-3 cm of snow is possible in places, mainly above 100m, with icy stretches forming as this arrives - some persisting during the day or reforming as the precipitation clears during the evening." Snow and ice When: 12am to 3pm on Sunday Where: County Armagh, County Down, County Fermanagh and County Tyrone. The Met Office said: "An area of sleet and snow will move eastwards across the south of Northern Ireland overnight into Sunday morning, clearing from the west later around sunrise but lingering over the south-east. "Some small accumulations of snow are likely with 1-3cm in places though the south-east may see slightly larger amounts with 5cm possible, particularly around the Mourne mountains. "With wet snow falling and low temperatures icy stretches are also expected to form." Snow and ice When: 10.30am on Saturday to 11am on Sunday. Where: Stirling, Na h-Eileanan, Siar Highland, Orkney Islands, Shetland Islands, Dumfries and Galloway, Argyll and Bute, East Ayrshire, East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, South Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire. The Met Office warned: "Scattered sleet and snow showers will continue throughout the day and overnight into Sunday. "This will lead to possible lying snow accumulations of 2-4cm at low levels and 5-10cm in higher spots. Icy patches are also likely to form overnight." England There was one severe flood warning ("severe flooding, danger to life"), 97 flood warnings ("flooding is expected, immediate action required), and 96 flood alerts ("flooding is possible, be prepared). The severe flood warning was for the English River Dee at Farndon in Cheshire. At the peak of flooding earlier this week, there were more than 400 warnings and alerts. For a complete list of flood warnings and alerts in England, Residents in some areas along the River Severn have been advised there could be flooding into Saturday, with some levels peaking at heights similar to the February washout last year. In Worcester, at-risk householders are being contacted by the city council and offered rest-centre accommodation. The Environment Agency has warned of "exceptionally high river levels" following days of heavy rainfall in the wake of Storm Christoph, with hundreds of properties across the country flooded. Care home residents were among those evacuated in several areas across the North West. River levels around Ironbridge in Shropshire were expected to peak at around 6.8m overnight. In Bewdley, Worcestershire, the peak is expected early on Saturday, at a "slightly lower" level than February 2020, according to Dave Throup from the Environment Agency. Wales A severe flood warning was in place for Lower Dee Valley from Llangollen to Trevalyn Meadows. In addition to this, there were three flood warnings and six flood alerts. for a full list. Local authorities in Wales will offer payments of up to £1,000 per household to support those affected by flooding, First Minister Mark Drakeford has said. Temperatures are set to plunge across the UK, with overnight lows potentially reaching -10C or colder in Scotland and -7C in northern England. Met Office chief forecaster Steve Willington said cold air from Iceland and the Arctic will bring with it "a mix of wintry hazards across the UK". He said: "In clearer conditions, overnight ice will remain a hazard, while a band of snow is likely to bring falls of 1-3cm quite widely across central areas of the UK, particularly the Cotswolds and higher ground in the East Midlands on Sunday."But snow outside these areas is also a potential hazard." Chris Tubbs, deputy chief forecaster at the Met Office, said wet weather is likely to return from the middle of next week. He said: "Once the certainty increases about which areas are most likely to be affected by potentially heavy rain, we may need to issue further warnings, especially if next week's rainfall is likely to compound the impacts from this week." Rain is set to return next week, with the Met Office warning wet weather could "compound" the impacts felt in parts of the country already and Environment Secretary George Eustice saying it gives cause for concern at the potential for further flooding.
