Photos of the troops in the garage drew outrage from lawmakers."I’ve ordered the immediate return of all New Hampshire National Guardsmen and women from Washington, D.C.," Sununu said in a statement. "They did an outstanding job serving our nation’s capital in a time of strife and should be graciously praised, not subject to substandard conditions." Sen. Maggie Hassan expressed her outrage about the situation on Twitter. "After working day and night to defend our democracy, this situation is unacceptable. I’m pushing for answers — this needs to be fixed immediately," Hassan tweeted, before offering her office as a place for any National Guard member in need of rest. Major General David Mikolaities told WMUR that troops from New Hampshire slept in hotels and not in parking garages. Sununu later called the treatment of the National Guard personnel from across the country “appalling” in an interview on the Fox News network. He did not mention that about 50 members of the New Hampshire Guard actually slept in a hotel and not in a parking garage.“That’s my team,” he said. “I’m not going to let them sit in a situation after serving the country so bravely, doing what they had go do in the nation’s capital during a time of real strife, to be put in a situation of that kind of disrespect. So I pulled them out immediately this morning.”Sununu denounced “finger-pointing” over who was to blame, saying, “I don’t know who’s responsible. Frankly, I don’t care. I just got to protect my troops and do what’s right.”Sununu spokesperson Ben Vihstadt noted later that Sununu did not say during the interview that New Hampshire's troops slept in the garage."But he pulled them out before they had to," he said. Thousands of Guard troops from all across the country poured into D.C. by the planeload and busload late last week, in response to escalating security threats and fears of more rioting. Military aircraft crowded the runways at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, carrying Guard members into the region in the wake of the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.Guard forces were scattered around the city, helping to secure the Capitol, monuments, Metro entrances and the perimeter of central D.C., which was largely locked down for several days leading up to Wednesday's inaugural ceremony. The U.S. Secret Service announced that the special security event for the inauguration officially ended at noon Thursday. The Guard said that it may take several days to make all the arrangements to return the 15,000 home, but it should be complete in five to 10 days. Guard members will have to turn in equipment, make travel plans and go through COVID-19 screening.
