San Francisco’s vaccine supply will run dry by the end of this week if the city doesn’t receive any new shipments, Mayor London Breed said Tuesday.The city could run out of vaccines by Thursday, Breed said. That would affect people who would get the vaccine through the city; private providers have a separate supply, and Breed added that the supply constraint for the city “should not have a significant impact” on plans to open a mass vaccination center soon at City College.Dr. Grant Colfax, the city’s main public health official, said that the city has received 8,000 doses from the Moderna lot that the state recommended not be administered while they are studied further, following a spate of allergic reactions from the lot at Petco Park in San Diego."We paused on those out of an abundance of caution,” he said. “We have not received any replacement doses." Last week, the city got 12,000 doses overall. This week only 1,775. "This unreliable source makes it hard to plan."San Francisco’s supply crunch is emblematic of what health officials in the city and across the state have been saying for weeks: there are not enough vaccines to keep up with the public-health demand.San Francisco’s entire health care system has received 102,825 doses of the vaccine as of Tuesday, Breed said. But those are supposed to count as both first and second doses. If that trend continues I expect we will move out of that state stay-at-home order. The trend is in a positive direction... This is no time to let down our guard."Regarding the new variant, Colfax said, "There is a likelihood that it is more infectious."
