By | | Boston HeraldNo, the IRS isn’t texting or emailing you.If you get some sort of weird message purporting to be from the Internal Revenue Service, don’t respond or give any info — it’s just some scammer, the federal tax agency’s criminal investigations wing said.“In the last several months, IRS-CI has seen a variety of Economic Impact Payment (EIP) scams and other financial schemes designed to steal money and personal information from taxpayers,” the local branch of the IRS wrote in a news release that said Massachusetts residents should be aware. “Criminals are taking advantage of the second round of Economic Impact Payments – as well as the approaching filing season – to trick honest taxpayers out of their hard-earned money.”The IRS said it doesn’t text or email you if there’s something it needs. Similarly, the tax man doesn’t call you up and threaten to send you to jail or for you to pay tax on gift cards.The IRS told Bay Staters to watch out for text messages asking taxpayers to disclose bank account information under theguise of receiving the $1,200 stimulus payments and any emails, letters or posts from suspicious sources.There’s also flimflammery involving&nbsp; sales of fake at-home COVID-19 test kits and other unproven pandemic-related medicine items, bogus investment opportunities in vaccines and false donation requests.Anyone targeted can can the National Center for Disaster Fraud Hotline at 1-866-720-5721 or forward fake IRS emails to phishing@irs.gov.The IRS notes, “Taxpayers are encouraged not to engage potential scammers online or on the phone.”We invite you to use our commenting platform to engage in insightful conversations about issues in our community.
