Gov. Andrew Cuomo revealed in his State of the State address on Wednesday that an offshore wind turbine hub at the Sunset Park port is on his list for renewable energy projects coming to the state in 2021. The announcement comes after pleas from elected officials — most recently U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams — for the state to select the marine terminal for its wind port development program.The Brooklyn hub is one of three wind turbine projects Cuomo unveiled in a he says will help the state recover from the coronavirus pandemic. "Altogether, our offshore wind and land-based renewable projects will reduce carbon emissions by almost 16 million metric tons per year, attract nearly 26 billion in direct investment and create over 17,000 good paying jobs," he said. "This will help stimulate the state’s economic recovery from the pandemic while leading the way to the new green energy economy."The Brooklyn project will include a wind turbine staging facility and an operations and maintenance hub. It will create 1,200 new jobs, Cuomo said. He also announced two new wind turbine farms Long Island will add to 68 current solar and wind projects already underway.The city-owned South Brooklyn Marine Terminal was one of 11 ports around the state that was pre-qualified to be considered for up to $200 million in loan and grant funds from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. The funds would be matched by private firms looking to build and operate turbines across the metro area.At least one wind company, Equinor, which was behind an offshore wind facility near Jones Beach, has the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal site.Get more local news delivered straight to your inbox.
