Garcia-Castillo, 37, of Waterbury, was arrested Jan. 6, and charged with illegal professional gambling, illegal possession of gambling devices and illegally maintaining gambling premises.Their arrests stem from a long-term investigation by Connecticut State Police’s Organized Crime Task Force that “encompassed multiple bodegas throughout Connecticut operating under the organized direction of several individuals in Connecticut whose primary goal was to make illegal profits from wagers/bets,” according to police.Two Danbury bodega owners — Nilo Antonio Espinal and Cesar Jose Vasquez — were , following raids on Torres Grocery on Wildman Street and Pollas Supermarket on Main Street.More NewsEncarnacion’s arrest came following a raid at Deli and Market in Danbury last February, according to the warrant for his arrest.When state and Danbury police executed a search warrant at the Main Street convenience store, Encarnacion identified himself as the owner and said he purchased the business in 2019 from two men — one of whom continued to work as a store employee for several months.Encarnacion told police the employee used a laptop and printer in the store to illegally sell Dominican Lottery wagers, and he allowed him to do so in exchange for half the profit he made.According to the warrant for Encarnacion’s arrest, the employee made an average monthly profit of $400 to $500 by illegally selling Dominican Lottery wagers.Encarnacion told police the employee stopped working at Deli and Market in January 2020 and never returned for the laptop used for illegal gambling.State police said “a number of items of evidence related to the illegal gambling operation” were found in the store — including the laptop and printer Encarnacion mentioned, as well as “numerous gambling receipts” and approximately $8,501 in cash.Following his arrest, Encarnacion was released after posting a $10,000 non-surety bond, according to state police. He is scheduled to be arraigned at state Superior Court in Danbury on Feb. 4.Details on Garcia-Castillo’s arrests were not available Monday. State police said he posted a $100,000 court-set bond and is scheduled to be arraigned at state Superior Court in Waterbury on Feb. 10.
