You have permission to edit this article.JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- Mercyhealth confirmed that of the Janesville School District will happen next Friday.The district's announcement caused confusion since educators are not in the state's Phase 1A for vaccine distribution and the Department of Health Services has not finalized who will be eligible in Phase 1B.After 27 News reached out to DHS regarding the announcement, a spokesperson said that teachers were not eligible for the vaccine yet."We appreciate that our vaccinators are looking ahead, however, teachers are not currently eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. We are looking forward to having more vaccine and being able to protect more populations," DHS Spokesperson Elizabeth Goodsitt said in a statement. "DHS is following up with vaccinators who are not following the guidelines and will be following up with Mercy."During a press call Friday, Gov. Tony Evers was asked about the planned vaccines. He said that the plan would "likely go forward" since it was already publicly announced."While we would've preferred a different outcome, the fact of the matter is they made these plans," Evers said. "They announced it publicly, and they will likely go forward with that."A Mercyhealth spokesperson confirmed moments later Friday afternoon that the plan to vaccine Janesville staff would indeed move forward.DHS Deputy Secretary Julie Willems Van Dijk said vaccinators across the state should know they should first contact DHS if they have a significant amount of leftover doses after clearing the Phase 1A recipients in their area."We've asked people to follow the same rules together; in fact they've signed a contract to do that," Willems Van Dijk said. "If people have excess vaccine, we ask them to let us know and we'll redistribute it to get to the appropriate population."Van Dijk defended the state's policy of almost always sticking to the recipients in an approved phase as opposed to letting vaccinators and local health departments decide for themselves how to use excess doses."What we're really trying to do is cover certain populations first," Willems Van Dijk said.
