I TALKED TO A MOM WHO BROUGHT HER SON TO BE TESTED. SHE DIDN'T FEEL COMFORTABLE TAKING HER TO A LARGER, COMMUNITY-BASED TESTING SITE. SO SHE'S GLAD THIS OPTION EXISTS. WHAT WAS ONCE A VALET DROP-OFF AREA HAS TAKEN ON NEW PURPOSE DURING THE PANDEMIC. &gt;&gt; WITH THE NUMBERS RISING, YOU JUST CANNOT BE OVERLY CAUTIOUS AT THIS POINT. SO THIS WAS PERFECT FOR ME. &gt;&gt; ON MONDAY, MOM DWANA SMITH HAD HER 9-YEAR-OLD NOLA PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENT TESTED FOR COVID-19. HE'S ONE OF MORE THAN 3500 STUDENTS ACROSS SEVEN PARISHES TO BE TESTED SINCE THE PROGRAM AT CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL FIRST STARTED. &gt;&gt; I WAS ABLE TO JUST COME UP, DRIVE THROUGH, AND THERE WAS HARDLY ANY WAIT AT ALL, AND THE PROCESS WAS QUICK AND SIMPLE. IT REALLY WAS. &gt;&gt; THAT'S BY DESIGN, ACCORDING TO DR. LERON FINGER. HE SAYS MORE YOUNG PEOPLE THAN EVER ARE TESTING POSITIVE FOR CORONAVIRUS IN THE COMMUNITY. THAT NUMBER TOPPED 13% JUST LAST WEEK FOR PEOPLE 21 AND UNDER. &gt;&gt; IT'S IMPORTANT BECAUSE AS WE CONTINUE TO GRAPPLE WITH THIS, FROM A PUBLIC HEALTH STANDPOINT, EVERY IDENTIFIED CASE THAT WE GET IS ONE MORE THAT WE CAN MORE EFFECTIVELY ISOLATE AS OPPOSED TO BEING OUT THERE IN THE COMMUNITY. &gt;&gt; HE ADDED THAT SHARING INFORMATION LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS ALLOWS THEM TO MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT IN-PERSON VERSES VIRTUAL LEARNING. IT IS A PARTNERSHIP PARENTS APPRECIATE. &gt;&gt; I WAS KIND OF LOOKING FORWARD TO HIM RETURNING TO SCHOOL AFTER THE HOLIDAYS, BUT I DO UNDERSTAND. SO WE JUST HAVE TO MAKE THE BEST OF THIS SITUATION RIGHT NOW. &gt;&gt; WE SHOULD MENTION THAT YOU NEED TO HAVE AN APPOINTMENT GET A TEST, AND MOST OF THAT TESTING IS DONE HERE AT CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL. The number topped 13% for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic started.In October of 2020, Children's Hospital began offering drive-thru COVID-19 testing to students, family members and school staff.To date, more than 3,500 patients across seven parishes have been tested. Dr. Leron Finger said the demand for testing has only increased in recent weeks. On average, 120 patients are tested each day.Finger told WDSU that the hospital shares its data with local school districts."I can’t tell you a more valuable resource that they’ve been able to utilize in their efforts to combat COVID-19," Finger said. "Now we can give those results in almost real time to parents and families, as well as schools, which is critical to making those quarantine decisions."Test results are normally available within two to three hours."That I wasn’t aware of," said Dwana Smith, the parent of a NOLA Public Schools student. "I had to wait 48 hours for my results, so I’ll get these results for my son within two hours."Smith applauded Children's Hospital for creating a safe environment to get tested."We had exposure, and I went to be tested last week at a free community place, and it was just too many people. I didn't feel comfortable bringing my son there," said Smith. "But I thought this was the perfect environment for him to be tested."The hospital also has mobile testing teams that can meet families in a community if transportation is an issue.
