Especially, with regard to the aforementioned quote. As someone who has been in the media business, so to speak, for thirty years, give or take, and a news consumer, if you will, for forty plus years, news is not news anymore. News is entertainment. It is designed, first and foremost, to attract and appease advertisers, who can hawk their wares to, concomitantly, the required audience. Secondly, the supposed "journalists" of today are less reporters (a far more accurate description of what their job is supposed to entail) than celebrities themselves. They are part and parcel of the societal strata they are supposed to be holding accountable. No better example of this incestuous relationship exists than the White House Correspondents' Association gala dinner every year. Where the media yuck it up and back slap with each other and the political class. Here is the ultimate reference point of the big club which the public does not belong to. While all this may sound like editorializing, it is not intended to be. These are facts. And Mr. Taibbi elucidated the matter in a manner far superior to what I can muster. All things considered, this is a must read piece. Read it twice, three times, or more. Pass it on to everyone you know.
