His name was Sean, from Thornhill, Ont., and he was having a tough time coping with his beloved Maple Leafs trading Wendel Clark that summer.Fast forward more than 25 years and Sean is still thin. He still prefers wearing T-shirts and blue jeans — and he still hasn’t come to terms with that Clark trade.I’ve known him this whole time as Sean, but there is a good chance you know him as DGB – or Down Goes Brown.I discovered his wit and humor long before he became internet famous, a darling of the hockey world. Sean emceed our wedding in 2000, the first time his humour was ever given a large stage. He was nervous and jittery, but holding the microphone you could see an awkward superstar in the making – the equivalent of Dominik Hasek’s appearance with Chicago in the Stanley Cup Final in 1992.And now, it feels like we’re back to being excited and nervous students on the first day of journalism school, because we’re both on the ground floor of something exciting and new.Along with Hailey Salvian, Pierre Lebrun and Scott Burnside, Sean and I are excited to be part of the team to help launch a new podcast on this platform: The Athletic Hockey Show.We will have new episodes dropping three times a week, tackling a wide range of topics and issues around the National Hockey League and tapping into The Athletic’s roster of more than 40 hockey writers. Our goal will be to get a fresh and timely perspective on the biggest stories in the game, while adding some colour, humour and insight along the way.Our episode format will be as follows:Mondays with Ian Mendes &amp; Hailey SalvianThis could not have worked out any better for me, as I get a chance to work with one of the talented, rising young stars in our industry on a weekly basis. I’ve developed a terrific connection with Hailey over the past year on Ottawa radio and we’re excited to bring that energy to a larger stage. Each Monday, we’ll be looking at the biggest storylines for the week ahead and connecting with beat writers from around the league. We’ll also do a regular analytics/fantasy segment with Dom Luszczyszyn, while Scott Wheeler and Corey Pronman will drop by for regular updates on prospects and the draft.Wednesdays with Pierre LeBrun &amp; Scott BurnsideUsing their established chemistry and connections from the Two-Man Advantage podcast, Lebrun and Burnside will address the biggest stories in the game, while landing league executives and coaches for news-breaking interviews and analysis. We are eagerly awaiting their first show under the new umbrella on Wednesday to see if they are still going to use Brass Bonanza as their intro theme song.Thursdays with Ian Mendes &amp; Sean McIndoeTruth be told, the only radio experience we have together is editing tape with razor blades in journalism school in the 1990s. But somehow I’m sure we’ll manage to put together some compelling and fun content. We’ll use Down Goes Brown’s columns as a leaping off point for lively discussions and we’ll make sure we make this show as interactive as possible — taking submissions via Twitter, e-mail and even voicemail. Plus, Jesse Granger will drop by every week to give us the best odds and money lines on upcoming games, as well as fantasy prop bets.One of the advantages of starting a new podcast is it allows us to be extremely flexible and adaptive as we try and find our voices.
