The state ranked No. 4 in terms of the percentage of outbound moves, the same as last year’s study.AdvertisementThe end-of-year report comes United Van Lines had identified Connecticut as a top destination for those relocating due to the coronavirus pandemic. That assertion seemed to be backed by other data, including the state’s surging home sales market and U.S. Postal Service statistics that showed thousands of New Yorkers relocating to Connecticut earlier in the pandemic.But by the end of 2020, United Van Lines handled 1,185 shipments for people leaving Connecticut compared to 682 for people arriving, numbers that nearly mirror the company’s 2019 totals here. Three metro areas in Connecticut ranked among the top 25 in the country for share of outbound moves: New Haven-Waterbury-Meriden (62%), Hartford-New Britain-Middletown (63%) and Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk (69%).Advertisement“United Van Lines’ data makes it clear that migration to western and southern states, a prevalent pattern for the past several years, persisted in 2020,” Michael A. Stoll, an economist and professor in the Department of Public Policy at the University of California, Los Angeles, said, in a release.The primary reasons people listed for moving from Connecticut included retirement (31.28%) or a job opportunity (30.26%). Those leaving Connecticut tended to be older, with 60.76% at least 55 years old.Among people moving to Connecticut, the most (38.18%) cited being closer to family as their primary reason. United Van Lines said that was a trend across the country as people sought to relocate to be with relatives during the pandemic.The states with the largest percentage of inbound moves in the study were Idaho (70%), South Carolina (64%), Oregon (63%), South Dakota (62%) and Arizona (62%). The states with the largest percentage of people moving away were New Jersey (70%), New York (67%), Illinois (67%), Connecticut and California (59%).In New York City, 72% of people who hired United Van Lines were leaving.Russell Blair can be reached at rblair@courant.com.
