WILTON — Warren County health officials say a recent underage drinking party attended by at least 50 people in a neighboring county has fueled a local outbreak of coronavirus cases.The party, which included a sleepover, was held Dec. 18 in the town of Wilton and attended by high school students and recent graduates from high schools in Warren County.Warren County Health Services said Monday that someone who attended the party was ill with COVID-19 and infected numerous others who were there, including at least 10 Warren County residents.&nbsp;New York state guidelines currently allow no more than 10 people to gather in a home at any given time.Quarantines from the cases have the potential to impact school operations when classes resume next week, the county health department said. At least one local school district — Glens Falls — has paused winter sports in response.“We are very disappointed to learn of the illegal and unsafe conduct that occurred at this party, and that people aren’t following public health recommendations,” said Warren County Health Services Director Ginelle Jones. “The people who attended this party may have exposed their loved ones and vulnerable populations to COVID-19 for the holidays. This type of behavior will only prolong this pandemic and cause more people to become ill. Parents should be encouraging their young adults to step up and do the responsible thing.”Warren County said it’s working with the impacted school districts as well as law enforcement from Saratoga County who are investigating the party. Contact tracing related to the party has been difficult, it said, as tracers received conflicting accounts of who was actually at the party.Saratoga&nbsp;County health officials were unable to immediately detail whether any of their recent cases have been connected to the party. Dr. Daniel Kuhles, Saratoga County's new public health commissioner, said in a statement that statewide contact tracing data has attributed over 70 percent of recent COVID-19 cases in New York to households and small gatherings.“These cases are another example of this trend, which we continue to work with (New York State Department of Health), other local health departments and healthcare providers to mitigate," he said. "As the new year approaches, it is more important than ever to take common sense measures to protect yourself and others from COVID-19. These measures include minimizing contact with others, especially those outside your home, avoiding gatherings, washing your hands often and wearing a mask.”Anyone who was at the party or “others of this nature” is advised to quarantine and monitor themselves for symptoms of COVID-19.
