Doug Jones, who lost a re-election bid to Republican nominee Tommy Tuberville, reported about $24.8 million in expenditures (more than 80% of the total) between July 1 and Nov. 23, according to records filed with the Federal Election Commission.The spending&nbsp;makes it the most expensive political race in state history.Tuberville, a former Auburn head coach, cruised to victory in November, getting 60% of the vote. He raised about $5.4 million for the race after July 1 and spent about $5.5 million.Jones raised about $16.5 million after July 1. He outraised his Republican opponents in the last part of 2019 and the first part of 2020.&nbsp;In the 2017 special election, Jones reported raising $21.1 million from July 1 to Dec. 31 that year and spent $20.6 million during that time. His opponent, former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, reported raising $3.2 million that year in the same period (which included a runoff against then-U.S. Sen. Luther Strange) and spending about $4.1 million.&nbsp;By comparison, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey reported raising $5 million and spending $7 million on her 2018 re-election campaign.&nbsp;Jones also had $1.8 million spent against him, most of it from the conservative, Washington D.C.-based Club for Growth. The organization also spent heavily against U.S. Rep. Bradley Byrne, R-Mobile, who finished third in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate.Tuberville got about $1.2 million in outside spending in support of his efforts, chiefly from the Club for Growth ($768,484) and GRIT PAC ($240,717), a political action committee formed to support the former Auburn head coach.The former Auburn coach takes office in January. Tuberville campaigned on loyalty to President Donald Trump and social conservatism.&nbsp;Jones is a leading candidate to serve as U.S. attorney general for President-elect Joe Biden.&nbsp;For subscribers:By comparison, spending in other federal races was light. Republican Barry Moore of Enterprise, who won the election for Alabama’s 2nd congressional district, raised a total of $799,190.85 and spent $833,231. Moore also benefitted from over $324,000 in outside spending, including $229,000 from the Club for Growth. The group spent more than $476,000 against Dothan businessman Jeff Coleman, who put more than $2.5 million into an unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination for the district.&nbsp;Democratic nominee Phyllis Harvey-Hall raised just over $57,000 and spent $56,000.&nbsp;In the 3rd congressional district, U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Saks, raised $1.2 million and spent a little under $1.1 million in his successful re-election bid.
