Mike DeWine shared the next steps for the vaccine during his Wednesday coronavirus briefing. The timeline for these vaccinations is not set yet, and some of the logistics are not ready, but DeWine said he wanted to share news as soon as possible.The state hopes to begin this phase in the middle of January.DeWine shared that nearly 87% of mortalities in Ohio are among those that are more than 65 years old. Whether certain age groups within that demographic will be prioritized for vaccination is still to be decided. Those who are more than 80 years-old make up 52.9% of deaths, according to the state’s data.The next broad category of people eligible to be vaccinated will be older Ohioans age 65+. DeWine did not provide a full list of the disabilities prioritized on Wednesday.DeWine placed a great emphasis on the availability for schools. He said that in conversations with educators and families, some families are struggling with remote learning and some students were were already behind are falling back further. He also said there have been reports of increased mental health issues and absenteeism.“I believe it’s time to get all our children who want to be in class, back in class,” DeWine said. “These kids are our future, these kids have been hurt in some cases by not being in school.”Children will not receive the vaccine. These vaccines will be available for adults at any school where officials want to return or maintain in-person learning. Many schools have pivoted during the holidays to remote learning, either to try to prevent the spread of coronavirus due to gatherings and travel or because of logistics or staffing challenges because of community spread.DeWine said that officials are open to discussion on what learning models would receive the vaccine, but the intent is to move students into in-person learning full time. “They’re being moved up because we want our kids in school. It’s a policy decision,” DeWine said. “That’s why that movement is taking place, so if a school doesn’t go in person, there’s really no justification to do that.
