Please try again “He was a customer for almost three years before I knew his name,” White told . “One day his wife (Cindy Rhyno) called me up and said he had some medical issues and I wasn’t supposed to feed him without her permission.” After learning of the health crisis, White told Hiscock he would donate one of his kidneys if he was a blood match. “Two days later, Skully contacted us saying that his lab results came back and … Tim could have one of his kidneys,” said Rhyno. White left Vancouver General Hospital on Wednesday, less than 48 hours after the transplant, while Hiscock was discharged on Friday. White says he is amazed at how fast he and Hiscock have recovered from the procedure. “I went in Monday morning, got a kidney taken out of my body and by Tuesday morning at 2 a.m. I was doing laps around the ground floor of Vancouver General Hospital,” he said Sunday. “I was eating solid foods, I had the catheter removed, the oxygen removed, the IV remove and I went home the next afternoon. I have walked my dog every day since.” The experience the two men shared in Hiscock’s hospital room the day following the surgery had a profound impact on White. “He was weak but we chatted for a little bit and eventually I just said, ‘Okay, so apart from the pain that we’re both feeling from being cut open, and the grogginess and everything. How does not being on dialysis and having the kidney feel?’ And he looked at me with a smile … and he had tears coming down his face. Despite being one kidney down after the surgery, White remains in a giving mood. On , the hotdog stand says it now offering free foot-longs for life to anyone who follows in White’s footsteps. White hopes the campaign, and his experience, will convince others to give a kidney to save a life. “It shouldn’t scare anyone … You have two kidneys and by the time you die, you won’t even have used half of one,” he said. “People live all the time with one kidney.” While Hiscock received the gift of life, in the form of a fist-sized, bean-shaped and blood-filtering organ, White figures he received something just as precious. “It was a cool journey for me. For them to be able to take something out of me while I’m alive and stick it into somebody else and make him work. To me that’s very cool. It was very educational experience,” said. “From December of last year to December of this year, Tim has probably left his couch 25 times. He spends five to six days a week in pain, throwing up, feeling nauseous and barely eating. Now he’ll be able to live.” Because White is under doctor’s orders to not lift anything heavier than 10 pounds while he heals, Rhyno set up a campaign to help with his recovery and cover any lost income.
