Pete Ricketts will order the state will relax some COVID-19 restrictions Saturday at 12:01 a.m.Hospitalizations across the state are below 20% for the seven day rolling average. That drops the state from the orange zone to yellow. Ricketts said the maximum capacity at indoor gatherings can increase from 25% to 50%, elective surgeries can resume if individual hospital capacity allows. But bars and restaurants must continue to limit groups to eight people or less and keep groups 6-feet apart.Ricketts said Nebraskans did what was needed to keep hospitals from becoming overwhelmed.But he cautioned the fight isn't over."Even with the light the other tunnel here we got to continue to remain vigilant to be able to slow the spread the virus and preserve our hospital capacity," Ricketts said.But Lincoln physician Bob Rauner said this is not the time to loosen restrictions."It's way too early to back off on things like extracurricular activities and house parties, I mean, all that stuff. Otherwise, we'll be right back to the near disaster we already had," Rauner said.Rauner is the president of Partnership for Healthy Lincoln.He said hospitalizations are trailing indicators and that the state should be using the positivity rate to determine restrictions. "It's like if you were going to go try to put a fire out in the fire department shows up and they spray water until they don't see any flames on the outside and then they go back home again, it's like no you got to put the fire out on the inside first, then you can relax," Rauner said.He adds they are just starting to see the post-Thanksgiving surge and Christmas is coming."We're like right in the middle of a really tenuous time right now. The goal is not just staying slightly below hospital fast and the goal is not to have dead Nebraska," Rauner said.Nebraska's chief medical officer Dr. Gary Anthone said even with the easing of restrictions and a vaccine coming, the state's message remains the same."We've held down the fort now for almost nine months. And now we see the cavalry coming. Now is not the time to quit fighting," Antone said.Local health departments like in Omaha and Lincoln can still impose stricter measures.State officials still recommend that people follow health guidelines of wearing masks, washing hands and avoiding crowded places.Nebraska Gov.
