Charlie Baker to veto what they called one of “the most radical pieces of abortion legislation in the country.”In a Wednesday letter to the Republican governor, pastors said an amendment to the state budget dubbed “The ROE Act” represents a “shocking and callous disregard for human life and the importance of parental involvement in the lives of children.”State , which codifies the right to an abortion in state statute and makes abortions legal for women after 24 weeks of pregnancy in cases where a doctor has diagnosed a fatal fetal anomaly, with veto-proof majorities on Friday. Progressives pushed to implement that change after President Trump named Justice Amy Coney Barrett to the United States Supreme Court, shifting the nation’s highest court rightward.Faith leaders take issue with the measure, which would allow underage girls to get abortions without their parents’ consent. Pastors say it would allow doctors to deny life-saving medical care to viable fetuses, something the ROE Act Coalition refutes.The budget section now being considered retains language that calls for life-supporting equipment to be available in the procedure room, “to take appropriate steps … to preserve the life and health of a live birth and the patient.”Baker this week said he had been “been focused on the COVID stuff” but vowed to “be done with both” bills on his desk within the 10-day window afforded to him to sign, veto or send the bills back to the Legislature with amendments.A decision on the budget bill is due Monday.The second controversial decision already waiting on Baker’s desk when the spending plan landed comes in the form of sweeping police reform legislation. If signed, it would institute the state’s first-ever licensing system for law enforcement and begin to roll back qualified immunity protections, ban choke holds and limit the use of tear gas and no-knock warrants.Baker’s decision is due Friday.Police unions across the state have called on Baker to veto the reform bill, matched by virtual rallies and letters from leaders in the Black community pressing for passage.With barely three weeks left in the current legislative session, the Legislature — and Baker — still have decisions to make on four more major bills tied up behind closed doors in conference committees.
