He’s built the benefits into an elaborate multi-city series, involving dozens of music acts and benefiting shelters in five different Connecticut cities.This year the event will be held online, as five local-band concerts expected to raise thousands for homeless shelters and other charitable organizations around the state. The shows happen in the first three weekends of December.Advertisement“This is our seventh year,” Batts says. “Last year we raised $5,000.”The series’ GoFundMe page has only been up since Nov. 17 and has already received more than $4,000 in donations, weeks before the concerts have even happened. Those who donate $25 or more receive a “Hip Hop for the Homeless” T-shirt. According to Batts’ pitch on the site, if $5,000 is raised “we can insure that all five shelters &amp; organizations who we are working with will get $600 each, we can cover all expenses for the t-shirts that weren’t covered by our sponsors and we can make sure that all production is completely taken care of.” He adds that, as seems very likely, “if we go over $5,000 we will split up every dollar amount and give that to the shelters and organizations.” Batts also promises “top of the line audio, video and live coverage and interviews that you want to see from your favorite local artists.”There are five separate online “Hip Hop for the Homeless” shows:The full list of performers, and which of the concerts they will perform at, is still being confirmed but Batts says all these acts are on board so far: the singular folk-indie hip-hop stylist Ceschi Ramos; New Haven-based MC/producer/poet Sketch tha Cataclysm; N.M.E. the Illest (the self-proclaimed “hardest working MC in Connecticut,” from Jewett City); another New London county rapper, Stryfe; Hartford’s Big Murf (whose new album is “Misadventures Vol. 1: Mega Murf”); Bristol-born Hartford-based Benn Grim of “Blah Sides” fame; Muggsy, who raps about the “New Britain State of Mind”; Justin “Long Story Short” Lifshitz; comedian Ron Lynch; Jobo (aka Jordan Bowen); Gambit, who has a brand new mixtape out; performer/producer Jimmy Vo; East Hartford’s “Woke” Reggie Blu; Hartford battle rapper Younga B; Kamoflage; AQMNI, the hip hop duo of Tyshawn Hooks and Christopher Bell; and female CT MC Hunni.And, of course, Joey Batts himself, who is itching to play out again. “I’ve spent so much of my career performing for people,” says the rapper, whose day job is teaching in the Hartford public school system. Though Batts was able to perform downtown at the outdoor Pratt Street Patio concert series, being unable to do live shows has been difficult.
