Detroit Free Press Mayor Mike Duggan told a national television audience Detroit is doing a better job fighting the novel coronavirus than its suburban neighbors and estimated it will take several months to vaccinate all Detroiters.Duggan was the first of two mayors to appear on "Face the Nation,"&nbsp;CBS News' long-running Sunday public affairs program. Duggan and El Paso Mayor Dee Margo were invited to&nbsp;discuss&nbsp;their cities' efforts to cope with a surge in COVID-19 cases, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.Duggan started by challenging host Margaret Brennan's statement hospitals in the city were at 90 percent capacity."The number you’re showing is the area," Duggan said. "Detroit actually has the lowest infection rate in the State of Michigan. We’re half of that of the surrounding suburbs."The mayor, as he has throughout the pandemic, praised Detroiters for following recommendations such as wearing masks. He has repeatedly cast his constituents as more responsible than people living outside the city limits."Detroiters were wearing masks," Duggan told Brennan. "it wasn’t necessarily true in the surrounding communities."The mayor went on to criticize the federal response to the pandemic and predict the city would use large parking areas around stadiums to help vaccinate Detroiters."The direction we’re getting from Washington is changing literally by the day," Duggan said. "I will be really glad when Joe Biden takes control of this and we get clear direction."Duggan is a Democrat and a long-time supporter of president-elect Joe Biden.Wayne County:Michigan:The mayor said America has never faced a challenge like administering vaccines to so many people. He said it would likely take several months to vaccinate Detroit's approximately 700,000 residents.The city established and operated a drive-through coronavirus testing site that tested more than a thousand Detroiters a day. Duggan said he hopes to establish multiple testing sites set up in large parking areas surrounding the city's arenas."We intend to vaccinate 5,000&nbsp;a day," he said. "The magnitude of what we’re talking about, this county has never experienced."Duggan said frontline workers will likely be the first to receive the vaccine."Occupation is going to go first … then people over the age over 65," Duggan saidM.L.
