By | | Pioneer PressThe coronavirus is spreading in Minnesota restaurants and bars, and that spread has increased markedly in recent months and weeks, according to data from the Minnesota Department of Health.Recent outbreaks in bars and restaurants dot the entire state, ranging from an Olive Garden in Roseville to the Blue Moose Bar &amp; Grill in East Grand Forks, reflecting how widespread the current surge of cases is.That data is one of the reasons why , but will allow some other businesses, such as hair and beauty salons, to remain operating as they are.As of Thursday, 219 establishments have been investigated by health officials and contact tracers after people with COVID reported visiting them. Of them, 139 bars and restaurants have been associated with outbreaks involving 2,766 cases, including employees and patrons.That’s a fraction of the total number of lab-confirmed COVID cases in the state, but the numbers aren’t believed to be remotely all-encompassing. Rather, they provide an index that shows the relative sources of spread. By comparison — and perhaps surprisingly — only 10 salons or barbershops have seen outbreaks, accounting for 58 COVID cases.Another note on the numbers: They’re only the “primary cases” — the people who tested positive and visited the bar. It does not include the secondary, tertiary and fourth-generation infections that those cases lead to — the others they infect. In fact, health officials believe that each person, on average, spreads the virus to nearly three others.Thus, Health Commissioner Jan Malcolm said, each case identified in these outbreaks could represent as many as 70 cases.That’s not to say bars and restaurants are to blame; it’s the nature of the disease: People gathering indoors, without masks and talking — often loudly above the din — is precisely how SARS-CoV-2 spreads. As the number of cases has surged in Minnesota, the number of outbreaks associated with restaurants and bars, as well as other establishments, has surged accordingly, the data shows.For example, by the end of August, 34 establishments had been identified since the beginning of the outbreak. In September, 18 were added.&nbsp; In October, 59 were added.
