Des Moines RegisterView CommentsThe Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating ammonia discharge that contaminated 10,000 gallons of water, according to a news release.&nbsp;DNR staff were rechecking a discharge from a fertilizer plant into a drainage ditch about six miles southeast of Clarion&nbsp;on Nov. 9, according to the release.&nbsp;After responding to a complaint about air pollution at the NuOrganics facility on Nov. 6, DNR staff&nbsp;found a discharge that had overflowed from a large storage tank, according to the release.&nbsp;Ammonia-laden water flowed into a road ditch, through an underground tile line and into a drainage ditch.&nbsp;DNR staff found contaminated water in the ditch for two to three miles downstream and collected samples for laboratory analysis, according to the release.&nbsp;They also found live fish in the ditch below the contaminated water, according to the release.&nbsp;Daniel Watterson, a DNR spokesperson,&nbsp;said investigators had&nbsp;not found any dead fish.&nbsp;More:A contractor hired by NuOrganics recovered approximately 10,000 gallons of contaminated water and dammed the drainage ditch, according to the news release. Low stream levels also helped contain contaminated water in pools and prevented&nbsp;it from moving downstream into the Iowa River, the DNR said.The plant has shut down production as staff investigate&nbsp;the cause of the discharge.DNR will continue to monitor the cleanup and consider appropriate enforcement action.Amber Mohmand covers breaking news for the Des Moines Register.
