Indianapolis StarView CommentsMore than 2,200 additional cases of COVID-19 in Indiana schools were reported Monday by the Indiana State Department of health. The majority of the cases occurred last week, but some date back as far as September, according to the new data.Of the additional cases reported Monday, 1,572 occurred in&nbsp;students, 319 occurred in&nbsp;teachers and 380 occurred in school staff members. The state also set a new record for most school cases reported in a single day, with more than 300 cases reported Nov. 2.The rise in cases reported among students and school employees is following&nbsp;a dramatic increase in the cases reported across the state that's becoming harder for schools to manage. While most school leaders have said they'll keep school buildings open as long as possible, some&nbsp;Central Indiana districts have had to temporarily close buildings or classrooms.Indianapolis Public Schools closed Raymond F. Brandes School 65 for two weeks after it was affected by&nbsp;several positive cases. Hamilton Heights High School and New Palestine High School are currently closed and delivering all instruction remotely and Carmel Clay Schools recently had to quarantine three classrooms of students.The department updates its dashboard of COVID-19 cases in schools weekly on Mondays and the current totals since the start of the school year are 5,916&nbsp;students, 1,235 teachers and&nbsp;1,429 staff members statewide&nbsp;— more than 8,500&nbsp;cases total. There are roughly 1.1 million students in the state, according to the Indiana Department of Education.Participation in the state dashboard is not mandatory for schools, and 424&nbsp;schools have yet to report to the state. Of the schools that have reported to the state, the number that have not seen a case yet continues to drop. As of Monday, 1,589 schools have at least one case and 353&nbsp;have no cases. More than 100 schools reported a case for the first time in this update.For the data that has been reported, the state dashboard lists data by school. IndyStar has compiled totals for public school&nbsp;districts in Central Indiana — those in Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Marion, Morgan and Shelby counties.Totals are listed as a minimum number of cases because for schools that&nbsp;reported somewhere between one and five cases, the state has suppressed that data for privacy reasons.&nbsp;Also listed are&nbsp;each&nbsp;district's&nbsp;2019-20 student enrollment figure and the date that the school year started.
