The latest rules are meant to keep patients and hospital workers as healthy as possible, especially given that many people with COVID-19 don’t know they have it, she said.“It’s just really, really challenging, and we recognize the stress that this puts on patients and families when they can’t be together at such a stressful time in their lives,” Palermo said, noting Amita is using technology to try to keep patients and families connected.Rush University Medical Center and Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox began in recent weeks prohibiting visitors for most hospital patients, with exceptions. Edward-Elmhurst Health began allowing only one patient per visitor Oct. 30, with some exceptions.The Chicago Fire Department is generally no longer allowing family members to ride in ambulances with patients to hospitals, said spokesman Larry Langford in an email.Many hospitals relaxed their visitor policies over the summer as the number of COVID-19 cases in Illinois dipped. The tighter restrictions come amid a second wave of COVID-19 cases in Illinois that led Gov. J.B. Pritzker to prohibit indoor dining in many places and has prompted some schools to return to full remote learning., in hopes of ensuring they have enough capacity to take growing numbers of COVID-19 patients.Some hospitals have nearly as many COVID-19 patients now as they did in the spring, including Amita Health Saint Joseph Medical Center Joliet and Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.Edward-Elmhurst Health, which has hospitals in Elmhurst and Naperville, has more COVID-19 patients than it did in the spring.
