It comes after the UK Government decided to ban foreign visitors from Denmark due to widespread outbreaks of in the country's mink farms. All non-British national or resident travellers who have been in or transited through Denmark in the last 14 days will be denied entry into the UK. The rule came into effect in the morning of Saturday, November 7, at 4am.Public Health England has issued new guidelines for the NHS to follow. The document says that Brits coming back from Denmark should self-isolate for 14 days, without seeking access to healthcare unless necessary and delaying non-urgent treatment until after their period of isolation. Individuals who return from Denmark and need healthcare during their 14 days of self-isolation should be treated "in strict isolation in a single room with en-suite bathroom facilities", according to the guidelines. They should also be assessed on admission and then every five days while in hospital. Public Health England added that if any of those people test positive for Covid-19, they should be moved to a "specialised infectious diseases centre". The WHO said SARS-CoV-2 strains infecting minks, which are subsequently transmitted to humans, may have acquired "unique combinations of mutations". Advanced laboratory studies are required in order to fully understand the impact of specific mutations. Six countries - Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Italy and the US - have reported SARS-CoV-2 in farmed minks to the World Organisation for Animal Health. Since June 2020, 214 human cases of Covid-19 have been identified in Denmark with SARS-CoV-2 variants associated with farmed minks, including 12 cases with a unique variant, reported on November 5. All 12 cases were identified in September 2020 in North Jutland, Denmark, and the cases ranged in age from seven to 79 years, with eight having a link to the mink farming industry while four cases were from the local community. The WHO said initial observations suggest that the clinical presentation, severity and transmission among those infected are similar to that of other circulating SARS-CoV-2 viruses.But they added that this variant, referred to as the "cluster 5" variant, had "a combination of mutations, or changes that have not been previously observed". The Danish government has said it would cull all minks to prevent human contagion which authorities said could be more resistant against future vaccines for people. Around 17 million animals could be culled, at the cost of $800 million, which has prompted a demand for evidence behind the decision by some politicians.Follow MORE ON
