"Can Nebraska 2 be the pivotal vote in this election? There is a scenario out there, or two where we become the 270th Electoral College vote," said Randall Adkins, a professor of political science at the University of Nebraska Omaha. Joe Biden took the district's electoral vote Tuesday, and spoke about the win Wednesday as the nation waited to learn who would win the presidency. "We flipped Arizona and the 2nd district of Nebraska," Biden said during a speech to supporters. Only Nebraska and Maine allocate electors based on congressional districts, as opposed to a winner-take-all model like other states. Adkins noted district 2 broke with the state once before in 2008, when its electoral college vote went to Barack Obama. "What it reminds us of is that while the 2nd Congressional District is part of the state of Nebraska, it is different than the state of Nebraska, overall," Adkins said. Adkins also said in 2008 and 2020, democratic campaigns spent more money in district 2 than in they did in 2012 or 2016."Both Barack Obama in 2008 and Joe Biden in 2020 actually made an investment in the district, financial investment in the district, in terms of field offices, back in 2008, and especially advertising dollars here in 2020," Adkins said. Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Jane Kleeb said they're seeing demographic shifts in district 2. "You have Latino population growing and trending our way, which is different than in other states, you know they're almost trending or republican, but in our state they're trending Democratic," Kleeb said, "You have suburban women who may have started out Republican but have leaned to Democrat." Kleeb also said Biden's win in district 2 will mean more resources from the Democratic National Committee and others."They really want to see a federal or presidential win. And so we had to prove ourselves, and we did. And we did that strong," Kleeb said. KETV Newswatch 7 reached out to multiple state and local Republican leaders who declined to comment on the dynamics in district 2. Adkins though had this perspective on what it could mean if all states split votes in this way. "I mean the way we campaign would change really, really dramatically.
