A long-time independent rather than Democrat, he describes himself as a democratic socialist, and his supporters say he has energised voters far more than the moderates. Left-wing Massachusetts Senator , who came third in the Democratic primary, is just as radical: she says the US economic model is broken and needs a tax overhaul targeted on the wealthy.&nbsp;Elsewhere in the Democratic Party, some of the most exciting new personalities have been the most radical, like , the 31-year-old New York Representative elected in the 2018 mid-term wave. She is part of a quartet of minority women Representatives dubbed ‘The Squad’ that includes Minnesota’s Ilhan Omar, Massachusetts’s Ayanna Pressley and Michigan’s Rashida Tlaib: they have electrified debate, reaching new voter groups while also becoming targets for Republicans. Although just four Representatives, the Squad reflects the long-term shifts between the parties: the Democratic coalition is increasingly non-white, secular, educated, urban, and young.However, the left wing, while influential, is not dominant. Mr Sanders and Mrs Warren combined did not generate as much support in the primaries as Mr Biden and the other centrists like California Senator Kamala Harris, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, and former South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg. Nor are they backed by the Democratic congressional leadership: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are both centrists.&nbsp;In his first presidential debate with Mr Trump last month, Mr Biden distanced himself from their signature plans like the Green New Deal co-authored by Ms Ocasio-Cortez and Mr Sanders’s proposed Medicare for All. Nor has he backed calls to defund the police in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests.&nbsp;But while Mr Biden does not share their agenda, he engaged with the party’s left wing this year to help shape his policies, notably Mr Sanders and Ms Ocasio-Cortez on climate change. Even if he only adopts some of their positions, he has shifted enough to make his policy platform possibly the most progressive of any presidential candidate in over a century.
