Charlie Baker didn’t go so far as to cancel Thanksgiving, but he did warn the holidays would “look and feel different this year,” as he urged people to limit celebrations to immediate family as a fall spike in coronavirus cases arrives.“The science on this one’s pretty clear — gathering in groups indoors for an extended period of time with family and friends is likely the worst possible scenario for spreading the virus,” Baker said during his regular coronavirus briefing Tuesday.Cases have been on the rise recently in Massachusetts where Tuesday marked — levels not seen since the pandemic first peaked in May.The only “safe” way to celebrate this year is with members of your immediate household or virtually, according to guidance released Tuesday by the Department of Public Health.“This is the best way to avoid bringing this terrible virus to your grandparents, parents and loved ones,” Baker said.Health Secretary Marylou Sudders agreed saying, “It’s not a good idea to risk their health for one day of celebration.”Baker said he is curtailing his own Thanksgiving plans, which he said would include “immediate family, and that’s it” this year — a far cry from the 18 he said “crowded” his table last year.Reminding people “COVID doesn’t take vacation or respect holidays,” Sudders urged people who choose to mark the holiday with friends and family outside of their household to wear a mask, keep it small, keep it short, don’t share food or drinks and get tested.The trajectory of the fall spike in cases “depends on how we as a commonwealth respond to it,” Baker said, reiterating his call for people to avoid indoor Halloween parties this weekend and to adhere to COVID protocols like mask-wearing, good hygiene and social distancing.“Use your head and think about how your actions will affect those around you,” he said.The Republican governor also revealed new details on what prompted his administration to shut down indoor skating rinks for two weeks after cases were linked to youth hockey games.Calling parents and coaches “irresponsible,” Baker said many didn’t cooperate with state contact tracers, including some coaches who refused to supply team rosters.Baker said the state Department of Public Health found more than 30 clusters and over 110 positive cases, 22 probable cases and 220 close contacts in 20 rinks across the state.
