They said he mishandled allegations of domestic violence involving a Republican candidate for Congress.On Tuesday, the Trinity College graduate from Derby said he is ready for a new challenge after more than five years as the Connecticut GOP’s leader.AdvertisementRomano inherited a state party that was chronically underfunded and held no statewide offices or seats in Congress.The son of a history teacher and a janitor, he sought to broaden the party’s appeal. His strategy worked in blue collar parts of the state, such as eastern Connecticut and the Naugatuck Valley, where Republicans have had success in recent years.“He comes from blue collar roots in the Valley and that’s the kind of chairman we need if we’re going to win in Connecticut and resonate with middle-income and working class voters who are really feeling the effects of Gov. Malloy’s policies," Tim Herbst, the former first selectman of Trumbull and a one-time Romano ally said in 2015.Prior to becoming chairman, Romano helped elect Republican Erin Stewart as mayor of New Britain, a traditionally Democratic community, and he ran Herbst’s 2014 campaign for state treasurer, when Herbst narrowly lost against Democrat Denise Nappier.During Romano’s tenure as chairman, the party made significant strides in the legislature, winning 18 seats in the state Senate in 2016 and tying for control of the chamber with the Democrats.But those successes were short-lived, as the Democrats regained full control of the Senate and maintained their grip on the House of Representatives.Republican efforts stay competitive in statewide and congressional contests also failed, as wealthier, suburban communities increasingly trended Democratic.Daniela Altimari can be reached at dnaltimari@courant.com.
