Tim Walz.Negotiations are underway to buy a building “where we can properly handle with dignity and respect and safety the bodies of Minnesotans who … may fall victim to the coronavirus,” said Joe Kelly, director of Minnesota Homeland Security and Emergency Management.As of Friday, 534 people have died from COVID-19 in Minnesota.There’s been a slowdown in the number of funerals and burials, as restrictions are in place on how many people can gather for a funeral, which has meant storage in some funeral homes and hospitals is “full and overflowing,” according to Kelly.“I know this is a sensitive topic, it’s an uncomfortable topic for a lot of people, but we need to have a capability, we need to have a plan for a large number of deaths,” he said.The building would be used to temporarily store bodies “until their families are ready to lay them to final rest,” Kelly added.Walz called on the Minnesota Legislature on Friday to replenish and extend the state’s COVID-19 fund, where the funding for the warehouse was earmarked.Walz signed a $200 million fund into law on March 19 to provide resources to protect Minnesotans from the coronavirus and maintain state government operations. There is $65 million remaining in the fund, which is set to expire Monday.Nearly $135 million has been allocated from the fund, including to buy tests and testing materials, prepare an alternate care site for an expected surge in hospitalizations and procure personal protective equipment.
