The man accused of fatally shooting two law-enforcement officers in California this summer was communicating with another man accused of shooting up a police precinct in Minneapolis during protests against the police killing of George Floyd, according to court documents released Friday.Both men are members of the “Boogaloo Bois,” a loosely connected group of anti-government extremists who hope to accelerate a second American civil war, prosecutors said.The connection between Steven Carrillo and Ivan Harrison Hunter was revealed after Hunter, 26, was charged Friday with spraying 13 rounds from a Kalashnikov-style rifle toward the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct building on May 28. The building was the target of arson and looting during protests against the May 25 killing of Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer.Carrillo, 32, is accused of spraying bullets across a guard shack in front of the Ronald V. Dellums Federal Building in Oakland on May 29, killing David Patrick Underwood, a federal security officer from Pinole, and wounding another person.One week after the Oakland shooting, the Air Force sergeant allegedly ambushed deputies in Santa Cruz County who were responding to reports of a van containing guns and bomb-making materials. Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller, 38, was killed and several other deputies were wounded.Authorities said Hunter and Carrillo had been messaging each other on Facebook before, during and after the Oakland and Minneapolis shootings. About four hours after the shooting that killed Underwood, Hunter messaged Carrillo, “go go go,” .Hunter sent another message that said, “boog,” a reference to the violent movement that seeks the overthrowing of the government, the court documents said.“Did,” Carrillo responded, according to court records. He told Hunter he was hiding. Hunter told Carrillo to target police buildings.“I did better lol,” Carrillo responded, documents show.Related StoriesOn June 1, Carrillo sent Hunter $200 via a cash app, according to court records. Hunter thanked Carrillo, saying, “Now I stand a better chance.”Six days later, records showed, Hunter sent another alleged member of the Boogaloo Bois a news article about Carrillo’s arrest and the killing of the Santa Cruz deputy. “Well s—,” he said.Authorities said Hunter traveled from Texas to Minneapolis to meet with two other accused Boogaloo Bois, Benjamin Teeter and Michael Solomon. Video obtained by investigators shows a man wearing a skull mask and tactical gear walking up to the police building and shooting more than a dozen rounds toward it. The shooter yelled “Justice for Floyd!” before high-fiving another person.Updated to include drought zones while tracking water shortage status of your area, plus reservoir levels and a list of restrictions for the Bay Area’s largest water districts.Authorities said an informant told them the shooter was Hunter. Hunter’s Facebook page showed him wearing a similar skull mask, according to court documents. After he traveled back to Texas, Hunter sent a friend a message: “My mom would call the fbi if she knew what I do and at the level I’m at w[ith] it.” Hunter also posted a picture of a rifle with a floral-patterned magazine. Boogaloo Bois often identify themselves by wearing floral-patterned Hawaiian shirts.Teeter and Solomon were later charged with attempting to provide support to Hamas, prosecutors said. They’re accused of building firearm suppressors they meant to give to Hamas in exchange for financial support.Later, police said, Hunter posted other messages on Facebook bragging about what he did in Minneapolis. “I helped the community burn down that police station in Minneapolis,” one message said.Hunter faces a charge of participating in a riot.
