Daily case numbers for the novel coronavirus in San Antonio continued to stay relatively steady Sunday with the city reporting 116 new cases and one new death.The Metropolitan Health District also reported 2,583 cases and 16 deaths from previous months, bringing the county’s totals to 63,328 cases and 1,228 deaths since March. The backlogged cases are from electronic lab reports from tests conducted from June 13 through Oct. 4. The deaths occurred between July 8 and Sept. 29.Sunday’s number of cases reported by Metro Health was a welcome drop from Saturday’s 187 cases, but city officials are urging San Antonians to continue to take precautions to limit the spread of the virus, which has been surging across the country this week.“COVID-19 is still in our community, and we can't allow pandemic fatigue to cause us to relax,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg said Sunday. “Our best defense is constant and continuous safe behavior.”On ExpressNews.com:Bexar County’s test positivity rate stayed at 5.8 percent for the second week in a row, after having dipped below 5 percent during the week ending on Oct. 4, according to the city’s COVID-19 dashboard.The latest cases bring Bexar County’s rolling seven-day case average up to 152, with 1,151 total cases since Monday. Last Sunday’s seven-day average was 144 cases.The new death reported Sunday was a Hispanic woman in her 60s with underlying medical conditions. She was being treated at Methodist Hospital, officials said. Of those, 83 were in intensive care, down from 81 Saturday, and 30 were on ventilators to help them breathe, one more than on Saturday.Metro Health estimates that more than 45,700 San Antonians have recovered from COVID-19. In July, when case numbers skyrocketed in many parts of the country, including Texas, the city was frequently reporting more than 1,000 cases a day.Nirenberg on Saturday said case numbers in the city seemed to be leveling out now, but urged city residents not to “let our guard down.”“It’s higher than we want, but staying fairly flat,” he said.“You can protect yourself and others by wearing your mask, keeping 6 feet of distance from others, practicing good hygiene and staying home if you’re sick,” Nirenberg said Sunday. “If you’re feeling sick please isolate from others, including those in your household.”Those looking to get tested for the coronavirus can visit the city’s two free testing centers — the Cuellar Community Center at 5626 San Fernando St. and the Ramirez Community Center at 1011 Gillette Blvd. — from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments are not needed.Free testing also is being offered at the Freeman Coliseum at 3201 E. Houston St. every day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.. Appointments are required.
