Grand Lake, a popular recreation destination on the west side of the park, also is threatened and its residents have been evacuated.The by the Incident Information System shows the fire has crossed U.S. 34 near the western entrance to the park, a third of which was already closed because of the Cameron Peak Fire to the north.RELATED:In a late morning news conference, fire incident commander Noel Livingston said the fire had moved to the north of Grand Lake into the park and has burned up to timberline.“We’re evaluating whether the fire has actually crossed of over the top of the Rocky crest (Continental Divide) and onto the east side of the crest,” Livingston said. “We may have some spot fires that we’re trying to assess whether they’ve gotten up over the top. Once you get on the east side of the crest, there is continuous fuels down toward the valley floor.”Livingston acknowledged that the East Troublesome Fire could merge with the Cameron Peak Fire via growth through the park, although they are currently about 10 miles apart. Livingston said weather reports suggest the East Troublesome Fire could actually swing back to the south and east side of Grand Lake.“Currently, air quality is hazardous within Rocky Mountain National Park,” according to a park news release. “Trail Ridge Road is not passable on the west side due to downed trees on the road.”Grand Lake, the western gateway to the park, is a popular tourist destination with offerings that include a public beach and a marina. Activities include swimming, paddleboarding, fishing, sunbathing, boating and kayaking. It’s also home to the Grand Lake Yacht Club, which traces its history back to 1902 and claims its elevation (8,366 feet) makes it the world’s highest yacht club.Full closures of Rocky Mountain National Park are rare, though they sometimes happen due to snowstorms, and the entire park was closed in 2013 due to flooding. The eastern side of the park was closed in 2012 due to the Fern Lake Fire.
