Well, let's start by saying that there is quite a bit of information presented here. And then let us say that said information is presented in a relatively digestible way. To continue, let us also say that the article goes deep on the topic and does so fairly well. Plowing ahead, let us commend the Author's nice breakdown and presentation of the facts and figures. Now the bad news. The Writer makes quite a number of assumptions. This, in and of itself, is not necessarily a bad thing. In this case however, he does so with an extremely grating and generally unwarranted surety. Because, as the Beastie Boys presciently noted; "sometimes your crystal ball ain't so crystal clear". Lastly, and detrimentally as it were, the attempts by the Author at being cutesy and clever are, frankly speaking, vomit inducing.

I really appreciate author Joshua Benton's nuanced take on this announcement. Many publishers are running with the typical press release praising Google for their generosity and not asking the fundamental question of why would Google do this? Although there may be other reasons that Joshua doesn't mention in this piece, I think this is good journalism holding the powerful accountable and not simply regurgitating corporate talking points without questioning.

I like that this examines potential underlying motivations. Instead of a sunny "Google giving away free money" take, the author talks about specifics of the arrangement, and makes a few salient points along the way. Granted, his musings are speculative; however, he does provide concrete information to substantiate his logic.
