SARPY COUNTY CHIEF DEPUTY ATTORNEY BONNIE MOORE TELLING ME, QUOTE, "THE MATTER IS CURRENTLY UNDER REVIEW AND SARPY COUNTY HAS NOT TAKEN ANY FORMAL ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THE CLAIM." The Omaha man said he was shot in the eye with a pepperball by a Sarpy County deputy that May evening. "It seems like from what I can process, my right eye is almost shutting off," said Keup. "My brain doesn't really register the right eye."Keup was among the thousands of people protesting the police killing of George Floyd back in May, telling KETV Newswatch 7 he was there to photograph that moment in history. "It definitely affects my confidence talking with people and meeting new people," said Keup. "I almost always make sure I look at them from the side because then the eye is less noticeable."KETV Newswatch 7 has learned Keup filed a tort claim against Sarpy County. The county has six months to respond to his claim. Keup says if county officials decline or ignore the claim he will file a civil suit. "It just really makes me wonder what qualified him to carry that weapon and make the decision to fire it at me that night," said Keup.Sarpy County Chief Deputy Attorney Bonnie Moore sent KETV Newswatch 7 the following statement: “On August 10, 2020, Sarpy County received formal notice that Mr. Keup had asserted a claim against Sarpy County for injuries he sustained on May 29, 2020 during a protest in the area of 72nd and Dodge Streets. The matter is currently under review and Sarpy County has not taken any formal action in response to the claim.”"The anxiety that the event has brought on my life has been the most adverse things beyond losing my vision," said Keup.
