LOOKING AT OUR NUMBERS JUST THIS MORNING. I DON’T HAVE ANY ICU BEDS AVAILABLE IN OKLAHOMA CITY. I KNOW THAT THE NUMBERS WILL SHOW THAT I HAVE A HANDFUL THE PROBLEM WITH THAT IS I THINK WHAT DR. MCGOUGH TOUCHED ON IS WE’RE HAVING A SHORTAGE OF STAFFING AND SO DIRECTOR OF THE REGIONAL MEDICAL RESPONSE SYSTEM HEATHER USED AN APP OR GIVING THAT DIRE ASSESSMENT TO THE OKC CITY COUNCIL THIS MORNING THE COUNCIL VOTING TO EXTEND THE CITY’S MASK MANDATE THROUGH AT LEAST DECEMBER 6TH AS DATA PORT. IN THE MAIN ISSUE IS NOT THE NUMBER OF BEDS, ALTHOUGH THAT CAN BE A PROBLEM. BUT THE NUMBER OF NURSES AND DOCTORS TO STAFF THEM. I AM MOVING PATIENTS OUT OF OUR REGION. UNFORTUNATELY. WE’D LOVE TO KEEP THEM HERE. BUT IF I NEED AN ICU BED, AND I DON’T HAVE ONE HERE I’VE BEEN SPENDING. A LOT OF OVERNIGHTS AND I APOLOGIZE FOR MY VOICE BUT A LOT OF OVERNIGHTS CALLING OTHER REGIONS IN OKLAHOMA TO SEE IF THEY HAVE A HOSPITAL BED THAT CAN TAKE THAT PATIENT AND THEN FINDING TRANSPORTATION TO GET THAT PATIENT TO THAT BEEN HOSPITALIZATION STATEWIDE SURGING TO A RECORD LEVEL OVER THE PAST MONTH 760 COVID PATIENTS AS OF LAST NIGHT 277 OF THOSE IN THE ICU. AND SO AGAIN, LIKE I SAID, KEEP IN MIND THE NUMBER OF ICU BED SPECIFICALLY CAN FLUCTUATE QUITE A LOT REALLY BY THE HOUR AND THE STATE DOES SAY THAT THEY HAVE SURGED PLANS IN PLACE IF THEY DO NEED TO ACTIVATE THEM THAT IS BEING ACTIVELY LOOKED AT RIGHT NOW STATE OFFICIALS. THEY CAN VERY CLOSE LOOK AT THE HOSPITAL SITUATION. But during the city council meeting Tuesday morning, EMSA officials said there are major concerns.“Looking at our numbers just this morning, I don’t have any ICU beds available in Oklahoma City,” said Heather Yazdanipour, EMSA director of the regional medical response system. “I know that the numbers will show that I have a handful. The problem with that is, I think, what (Oklahoma City-County Health Department Executive Director Dr. Patrick McGough) touched on, is we’re having a shortage of staffing.”Yazdanipour gave the dire assessment during the same meeting that the OKC City Council voted to extend the city’s mask mandate until at least Dec. 7. She said the main issue is not the number of beds, although that can be a problem, but rather it's the number of nurses and doctors to staff them.“I am moving patients out of our region, unfortunately,” Yazdanipour said. “We’d love to keep them here, but if I need an ICU bed and I don’t have one here, then I’ve been spending a lot of overnights … but a lot of overnights calling other regions in Oklahoma to see if they have a hospital bed that can take that patient and then finding transportation to get that patient to that bed.”Hospitalizations statewide have surged to a record-level over the past month.
