HER WHITE, 2016 CHEVY CRUZ LIKE THIS ONE HAD BEEN REPOSSESSED BY HER LEASING COMPANY, GM FINANCIAL, DESPITE BEING FULLY UP-TO-DATE WITH PAYMENTS. &gt;&gt; MY DRIVER'S LICENSE, MY DEBIT CARD, MY CASH, MY BAG, EVERYTHING, BECAUSE I WAS HIKING. EVERYTHING WAS IN THE CAR. SO I CALLED THE POLICE DEPARTMENT, BECAUSE I COULDN’T CALL A TAXI, I COULDN’T CALL AN UBER. MY MASK WAS IN MY CAR. I HAD NOTHING. BEN: AND HER CAR WAS REPOSSESSED MORE THAN A WEEK BEFORE HER LEASE WAS SCHEDULED TO END. NOEL’S 48-MONTH LEASE WAS APRIL 1, BUT WITH EVERYTHING SHUT DOWN BACK THEN DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, SHE AND GM AGREED TO A SIX-MONTH EXTENSION. THE MATURITY DATE IN HER ONLINE GM ACCOUNT EVEN CHANGED TO OCTOBER BUT SUDDENLY IN LATE GM SEPTEMBER, FINANCIAL DISREGARDED ALL THAT, INCLUDING THE ON-TIME PAYMENTS SHE’S BEEN MAKING. &gt;&gt; THEY SAID MY LEASE WAS OVER IN APRIL, AND THEY WERE RESPOSSESSING MY CAR BECAUSE IT WAS 120 DAYS OVERDUE. SO I HAVE SIX MONTHS OF ADDITIONAL PAYMENTS ON THAT VEHICLE THAT THEY’RE REFUSING TO ACKNOWLEDGE. BEN: MASSACHUSETTS STATE LAW PROVIDES A SPECIFIC TIMELINE OF CLEAR NOTIFICATIONS LENDERS MUST FOLLOW AFTER PAYMENTS ARE MISSED , BEFORE A CAR IS REPOSSESSED. BUT THERE ARE NO NOTICES REQUIRED FOR REPOSSESSING LEASED VEHICLES. STILL, NOEL’S CAR SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN TAKEN, BECAUSE SHE HADN’T MISSED ANY PAYMENTS. &gt;&gt; I WAS LAID OFF FOR FOUR AND A HALF MONTHS, AND I STILL KEPT MY PAYMENTS CURRENT. I NEVER OWED THEM A DIME. BEN: NOT ONLY IS GM FINANCIAL NOW SAYING THE SIX EXTRA PAYMENTS, TOTALING NEARLY $1500 WON’T LOWER HER BUYOUT PRICE FOR THE CAR, THEY’RE ALSO TACKING ON $700 IN REPO AND STORAGE FEES. AND THE COMPANY DINGED HER CREDIT REPORT, DROPPING IT BY MORE THAN 100 POINTS. &gt;&gt; I WOULD LIKE THEM TO TAKE THOSE REPO FEES OFF. I’D LIKE THEM TO ACKNOWLEDGE THOSE SIX MONTHS’ PAYMENTS, AND TAKE IT OFF THE BUYOUT PRICE, AND LET ME HAVE MY CAR BACK. BUT IN A STATEMENT, THE COMPANY SAYS IT DOES TRY TO CONTACT CUSTOMERS WHEN THEY ARE APPROACHING OR PAST THEIR LEASE END DATE. AFTER WE CONTACTED THEM, THEY ESCALATED HER CASE AND REACHED OUT, AND BOTH SIDES ARE ACTIVELY TRYING TO RESOLVE THIS. She returned to find her white 2016 Chevrolet Cruz had been repossessed by her leasing company GM Financial. The repossession came despite Edgren saying she was fully up-to-date with payments.She said everything she had was inside. “My driver's license, my debit card, my cash, my bag --- everything because I was hiking. Everything was in the car. So I called the police department because I couldn't call a taxi, I couldn't call an Uber. My mask was in my car. I had nothing,” Edgren said. Edgren’s car was repossessed more than a week before her lease was scheduled to end.Her 48 month lease was originally supposed to end on April 1, but with everything shut down back then due to the pandemic, she and GM Financial agreed to a 6-month extension.The maturity date in her online GM account even changed to October 1. But suddenly, GM Financial disregarded all that, including the on-time payments she's been making.“They said my lease was over in April and they were repossessing my car because it was 120 days overdue,” Edgren said. “I have six months of additional payments on that vehicle that they're refusing to acknowledge.”Massachusetts state law provides a specific timeline of clear notifications lenders must follow after payments are missed before a car is repossessed. But, there are no notices required for repossessing leased vehicles. Nevertheless, Edgren's car should never have been taken because she hadn't missed any payments. “I was laid off for four and a half months and I still kept my payments current. I never owed them a dime,” she said. GM Financial says the six extra payments totaling nearly $1,500 won't lower her buyout price for the car and is tacking on $700 in repossession and storage fees.The company also impacted Edgren’s credit report, dropping it by more than 100 points. “I would like them to take those repo fees off,” Edgren said. “I'd like them to acknowledge those six months' payments and take it off the buyout price.
