I haven’t been unemployed for 36 years,” said Mario Sandoval who is now unemployed. He said, even with unemployment benefits, he is still short $750 a month and relies on his daughter to help him out financially.The unions which represent workers in hospitality, conventions, airport and entertainment industries want a “Right to Return” ordinance to be considered that would ensure unemployed workers get their jobs back when the economy recovers.County Commissioner Tick Segerblom said it’s a work in progress to get the proposed ordinance before the commission.“We’re trying to build support. We need four votes obviously. It’s a major issue as far as getting involved in employee/employer relationships, but these employees have been laid off forever,” he said.Rusty McAllister with the AFL-CIO said the rally is not just about union workers but for all workers.“This is us and everybody else. There’s a lot of people that have been displaced by this,” he said.The Culinary Union, the most influential in the state, is also part of the effort.“If they give them the peace of mind to say ‘when this pandemic is over, you guys are going to have your job’ people will feel completely different in their life right now,” said Geoconda Arguello-Kline, Culinary Union secretary-treasurer.The rally is being held outdoors and is follow social distancing guidelines.
